8 Cricketers and Umpires who died playing Cricket


The world is mourning the death of Philllip Hughes, a rising cricket star who died  playing one of the most loved international sports. While cricket is a relatively safe sport when compared with motor and contact sports, any elite sport carries significant risks. A standard cricket ball weights 160 grams an can fly throught the air at more than 130km/hr. Hughes, 25, died after he was sturck on the neck by a short-pitch celivery during a test match. He received medical treatment on the boundry before taking to hospital, wher he died two days later.

Darryn Randall, 32 (South Africa, 2013) Randall, a wicketkeeper-batsman, was struck on the side of the headwhile attempting a pull shot during a domestic match in South Africa. He collapsed at the crease and was taken to hospital but could not br revived.


Zulfiqar Bhatti, 22, (England, 2012) The fast bowler had taken five wickets during a club match in Stourbridge, in the English West Mindlands, before suffering a heart attack and collapsing on the pitch.


Alcwyn Jenkins, 72 (England 2009) The umpire dropped to the pitch and was flown to hospital after being struck on the head by a throw from a fielder while officiating a league match in Swansea. And the accident  has been described as "one of the most freak accidents you could ever imagine on the cricket field".


Wasim Raja, 54 (Pakistan, 2006) A life long cricketer, former Test allrounder and International Cricket Council match refree Wasim Rajan suffered a heart attack during an over-50s game in Buckinghamshire, England.


Raman Lamba, 38 (India, 1998) The former test cricketer suffered a similar brain injury to Phiillip Hughes after being heat on the head while fielding a short-pitch ball during a club match against a Bangladeshi team in Dhaka.


Ian Folley, 30 (England, 19930 The left-arm spinner was hit under the eye trying to play a hook shot in a domestic match. He later suffered a heart attack while under anaesthetic in hospital.

Abdul Aziz, 18 9Pakistan, 1959) Aziz was a promising young player who played as both openibng batsman and wicketkeeper when he died in a domestic match in Karachi in 1959.


Andy Ducat, 56 (England, 1942) The English batsman collapsed and died of a heart attack during a game in Lords.
