PK Review: P.K. is by no means a ‘bhaste of time’

Several stories and rumours about P.K. can now be put to rest. Aamir Khan is an alien who is trying to find his way back to his planet. After making 3 Idiots in 2009 it took five years for Rajkumar Hirani to find the right story to make a come back.

In Munna Bhai MBBS he questioned the medical system, in Lage Raho Munna Bhai he introduced Gandhigiri and in 3 Idiots it was Rancho doing his own number and questioning the education system. Now Rajkumar Hirani takes on the much hyped Godmen in India. Yes the plot is similar to the 2012 release Oh My God in which Paresh Rawal's character questions God and Godmen. The similarity is just in the idea but Hirani's PK is another level all together.

During this quest, he meets many characters, some of which are intrigued by his innocence and fresh perspective on the quirky, twisted ways of the workings of our planet.

Others simply think he is drunk and the repeated accusation “peekay hai kya” (are you drunk) becomes his adopted name, P.K.

Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) befriends P.K. and promises to help him get back home.

PK, who learns through contact, describes himself as an ‘astronaut’ and speaks Bhojpuri. His cuteness is exemplified when he says that he has visited the moon once. “Badi lul jagah hai,” he says. (It’s a very dull place).

He places god stickers on his cheeks to deter those inclined to punch him.

Hirani uses background music to underline every emotion to guide the audience towards how it should feel.

Pre-interval P.K. is absorbing, learning and being baffled by humans. Post interval the story takes a very black and white approach – good versus bad and repetition.

Also the songs (Shantanu Moitra) are easily be mistaken for tunes you have heard in one of Hirani’s previous films.

Saurabh Shukla as Tapasvi Maharaj is superb, Sushant Singh Rajput (as Jaggu’s boyfriend Sarfaraz) and Sanjay Dutt (as a Rajasthani band master) plays a likable performances. But it’s an Aamir Khan show all the way.

PK is an absolute must watch film and watch it before your friends tell you all the surprise elements in detail.
